Thanks, Pete- I've never tried the cloze test before listening. It's a good idea, then students anticipate what type of word, noun, verb, etc. should be in that spot.

How do you incorporate music in your lessons?I have used several methods, but I'm interested in more.1. Simple reading/listening/understanding lyrics...effective if followed with discussion2. Fill-in the blank with different target words (cloze test)3. rearrange jumbled lyricsSee More

Materials for understanding natural spoken English

I used to use a book called "Whattaya say?"; it was great for teaching about common reductions in English, such as "your-yer", "a cup of - a cupa", etc. I stopped using it when the classroom become more digital. I think the book still uses audio cassettes, and I'm just not willing to go back to the days of analog. Can anyone recommend some good materials for teaching natural speech patterns?See More

My opinion is that people actually speak less, but basically in the same percentages.

    Do people still talk?

I was talking with a student yesterday, and had a kid of revelation.I was teaching him how to ask for different foods, by container or amount, e.g. I need a bag of chips, and a pound of hamburger. We discussed the fact that at many grocery stores you really don't need to speak. All of the food can be grabbed by hand, without discussion. You can take your grocery cart to the self-checkout and the only voice you hear is computerized instructions which are also printed on the screen. You can get…See More
